An Introduction to Horticultural Lighting - Principles and Practice

Recent developments in LED technology and plant material markets have led to new interest in the use of electrical lighting for plant growth and production.  Unfortunately, the unique response and requirements of plants relative to the radiant environment make vision-based approaches to lighting system design only partially effective, when applied directly to plant production.

In this talk we will introduce the fundamental differences between human response and plant response, and discuss the implications of these differences for successful design and operation of plant lighting systems.   Three new ASABE/ANSI standards in horticultural lighting will be summarized as well, covering terminology, testing, and performance issues for plant lighting.

Speaker Bio: Daniel Ciolkosz is an assistant research professor at Penn State’s Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering.  He received his Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering, his Master’s and Ph.D. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering, and holds a P.E. License in the state of Pennsylvania.  He is currently chair of the ASABE Horticultural Lighting Committee, which is in the process of launching three new standards on the topic of lighting systems for plant production.  He is also an active participant in the NECC-1501 Sustainable Farm Energy group and one of the leaders of the extension.org Sustainable Ag Energy community of practice.

This program is accredited by the IES for 1 IES CEU or 1 AIA LU.
